A new medication for stroke recovery might help with repairing damage to the brain after a stroke occurs.
Stroke recovery has long focused on re-teaching the brain how to perform activities, such as learning to walk again or learning how to speak again. Paralysis and loss of speech are common symptoms after a stroke because of damage occurring in the brain after oxygen flow has been reduced during the stroke event itself.
A team of researchers is working on accomplishing these same results on the molecular level with the use of medications.
The researchers stated that one of their goals was to identify a drug that can help to replicate the effects of physical rehabilitation in the brain. Right now, PT is one of the best methods there is for helping someone to recover from a stroke, but it is often painful and slow. A medication that can help to make this process has the potential to help a lot of people recover more completely in a quicker, and less stressful manner.
Additionally, the team pointed out that physical therapy is limited in its efficacy because of how hard it is. Many people are not able to give it the attention and effort that it demands because of this.
This study comes out of the University of California at Los Angeles. The team published their findings in the journal, Nature Communications. Hopefully, this research acts as a launchpad for other projects of a similar nature.
Like other studies of this kind, more research is needed to fully understand the repercussions of this study. There’s always a lot more work to do if we are going to help improve the quality of life that those who have suffered from a stroke are able to experience.
Cardiovascular disease is the biggest source of mortality in the United States. A stroke is just one manifestation of this. Strokes don’t just kill, though. They cause disability and create difficult situations for families that are not emotionally or physically equipped to help a loved one. Having a support team in place to help with the recovery process is key for the long term wellbeing of your entire family.
If you have a loved one that is recovering from a stroke, professional level senior care might help your family to ease the burden a little bit. A stroke, or any other disability or challenge that you and your loved ones might be up against, is certainly not an easy thing to deal with. But having the right supports in place can make life a lot easier.
